Background

In October 2008, Express Scripts received an extortion letter with a threat to expose millions of member records including Social Security numbers and other personal information. Express Scripts notified the FBI to initiate an investigation, took aggressive action to enhance its data security and notified the affected clients and members. In November 2008 and again in August 2009, the perpetrator sent similar letters to prove possession of additional member records from the same period, and those affected members have been or will be notified. At this time, Express Scripts has not confirmed any fraudulent misuse of member information as a result of this incident. Express Scripts has also offered a $1 million reward for information resulting in the arrest and conviction or the perpetrator. Express Scripts stands firm in its refusal to give in to the demands of the extortionist. Investigations by the FBI and Express Scripts continue. (read more)
